Kate Cornwall is a cast and kiln-formed glass artist based in Ohakune beneath Mt Ruapehu. Creative Director of Glass Art In NZ (GAINZ) and Red Hot Glass, her practice spans casting, kiln-forming, flamework and mixed media, with a growing focus on sculptural work at the intersection of craft, contemporary art, and feminist history.
I’m drawn to expressing concern about complex social subjects like social injustice, unconscious basis, women’s rights, women’s health, and mental illness, highlighting issues with my often tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. An example of this is ‘Imperfectly Perfect’, speaking to the how flawed we humans are, how flawed love is.

I use a variety of techniques when working with glass, from lost wax casting, kiln forming, and working with a glassblower in her studio, to capture the desired outcome. I particularly enjoy the cross-over between the more classical fine arts approach I am working on, by incorporating glass painting within a thick glass structure, adding depth and dimension to the narrative, Life drawing explores the vulnerability of the human form, the portrayal of female versus male form, and its acceptability and censorship.
