Pukekoe East Road

I have driven past this view for many years & have always wanted to paint it, but it was a tricky spot to capture being on the busy main road in and out of Pukekohe. The hill depicted (which is actually a section of a tuff ring) is like a little pudding overlooking the Pukekohe East Explosion Crater & Bombay Hills Polo Club. The maar is considered the best preserved & deepest explosion crater in the South Auckland Volcanic Field, making it nationally important for geology & education. The rich volcanic soils created by eruptions hundreds of thousands of years ago are one of the reasons the Franklin district became famous for market gardening and potato growing. There is so much history and so many stories hidden in plain sight around us, and I’m looking forward to exploring more for future pieces.
