A child’s spade, partially buried and overtaken by mangroves, becomes a symbol of past, present and future — reflecting what previous generations have shaped and what will be left for those to come. Foundations explores the loss of play-based childhoods rooted in nature as a tech-based generation grows. Once a tool for digging, building and imagining, the spade is now entangled and partially obscured, yet its recognisable form remains. While play may be hidden or diminished, it is not entirely lost. The mangroves suggest growth, resilience and the possibility of new life.
