Wheel-thrown using coarse black stoneware clay, I have layered the underglaze onto greenware (unfired clay) to paint my impression of a chrysanthemum against the backdrop of a moon. Before firing, I carved into the clay to refine the foliage and blooms, creating contrast between the glossy painted surface and the raw, tactile clay beneath. By clear glazing some elements, I aimed to draw attention to the interplay between light and shadow in this complex flower; this piece was then glazed and fired.
