Oil on canvas with modeling paste texture.
Minnies legacy, is a whimsical portrait of Minnie Onion, a pioneering spirit born in New Zealand in 1869. Depicted in her wedding dress, adorned with a fish brooch gifted by her husband Hugh Fisher, Minnie gazes up at a beautiful Kokako perched above her in a Kowhai tree, set against a backdrop of a lush New Zealand scenery. The 89 gold leaves bordering the canvas edge pay tribute to her 89 years lived in New Zealand. This poignant painting celebrates Minnie’s role in the women’s suffrage movement and horrors the strong diverse women who have emerged from her lineage, weaving a rich tapestry of cultures and achievements. My great great grandmother is part of my identity and the generations to come.
