The Fab Three,
The second painting in the series of the Fab Three, begins with a burnt umber monochromatic underpainting, establishes a robust and earthy foundation for the cucumber beetle. This layer imbues the creature with a suprising gravitas and presence, far removed from a simple pest. It hints at the beetles connection to the soil and the broader agricultural landscape it inhabits. The translucent layers of red, yellow and blue, build up the beetles characteristic yellow-green hue and distinct black spots, revealing the underlying complexity of its colouralation. Despite it’s sometimes perceieved “pest “status, I invite my viewers to look beyond the immediate perceptions and acknowledge the intricate web of life where every species, even the seemingly mundane or problematic, contributes to the larger balance and the intricate web of life that sustains us all.
