Hand painted digitally then printed on high quality artist paper.
This piece was inspired by the story that dreadlocks found in a horse’s mane is a sign that fairies favour them to take on midnight races, it’s said they plait stirrups out of their hair. Tama is apparently a favourite as he regularly gets dreads and plant material stuck in his mane and forlock. I wanted to push that idea further and play with elements that were relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand.
– Instead of painting in actual fairies I decided to fill that role with our cheeky little Pīwakawaka (fantail). They’re a common sight out on the farm and often follow us and the horses around, catching all the insects that get disturbed by our passage. They’re one of my favourite little birds. In Māori lore they have a strong connection with being messengers, hence the name of this piece.
– The branch and flowers are from a Manuka plant which are common on the hill and through the gulley where Tama lives. It’s also an essential plant in the reforestation of previously cleared land.
– I made sure to include Tama’s standardbred brand in this piece, since all his other paintings have the wrong angle or his mane covers it. His racing name was Wait for Success and he raced till he was 9 years old.
