Season of the Sticks

“Ka mua, ka muri.” Like Victorian mourning jewellery, these vignettes are a manifestation of love, grief, and longing. I am the child of two immigrants. My youth was full of stories, memories, and emphera that speak of other places: Indonesia, Holland, Denmark. Their dislocation was amplified by their experiences during WW2. My own identity has been shaped by being the keeper of their stories and their caregiver. Now that they have both passed, I feel sharply their loss. Irma Ingrid Hansen was a vibrant woman, a colourful force of nature. Because of her I can face my future.
