The artist has used pointillism and 32 points of the star compass to bring together indigenous art inspiration and star navigation with compass locations.
The Maori compass divides the full horizon (360 degrees) into 32 equal areas called whare (houses) depending on where the sun, moon and stars rise and set. The four main houses representing north, south, west and east.
The navigator identifies with the stars as they rise and set to find his direction.
